High Temperature Superconductor—TSS114 Northwest Substation

Thu, 7 May 2026 · 8:30 am - 11:00 am

Step into the future of grid innovation at ComEd’s TSS114 Northwest Substation, home to the only in-service, active superconductor in the United States. This facility showcases ComEd’s pioneering collaboration with American Superconductor (AMSC) to pilot a High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) system designed to enhance grid reliability and resiliency.

Technology Spotlight: High Temperature Superconductivity

  • Superconducting Bus Tie: Operating at 12kV and 3000 amps, the HTS system functions as a bus tie between two terminals, enabling an N-2 contingency configuration that significantly boosts system redundancy.
  • Liquid Nitrogen Cooling: The system uses liquid nitrogen to maintain superconductivity, allowing for high-capacity power transfer with minimal energy loss.
  • Strategic Location: The Northwest Substation was selected for its similarity to the Chicago Business District environment, making it an ideal testbed for urban grid applications.
