2050 IEEE PES Vision: Defining the Role of Electrical Engineers in a Global Energy Future

The IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) provides the world’s largest forum for sharing the latest technological developments in the electric power industry, for developing standards that guide the development and construction of equipment and systems, and for educating industry members and the general public.

IEEE PES has undertaken an unprecedented global research effort – the Vision 2050 Project – to gather and analyze the views and opinions of PES members, industry experts, and energy consumers.

When completed, Vision 2050 will provide a comprehensive summary of the diverse world views of major energy issues, changing dynamics of power systems, electrical engineers’ role in the energy transition, and the solutions that will define a more sustainable, more secure, and more resilient energy grid and future.

During the 2026 IEEE PES T&D Conference & Exposition, attendees will be some of the first to receive a high-level overview of global research findings across a range of topics, including:

    • Views regarding the most significant energy challenges faced today;
    • Electrical engineers’ perspectives on how to sustainably meet growing energy demand;
    • The current views and opinions of AI and its future role in optimizing the power grid;
    • The opinions of how large data centers will impact the energy grid; and
    • An exploration of the critical role that electrical engineers, PES members, and other energy leaders will have in shaping our global energy future.

The results from PES Vision 2050 will help guide the industry to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.
